Being a one-man band, London-based Keith Harbottle relies on machines and guest musicians to plug the musical gaps, getting out and about live with a guitar and backing tracks (on mini disc) or going acoustic at open mic nights.
The debut single was released on Whimsical Records in 2006 and contains three "skewed" English pop songs. The lead track "Your Love Is" (also available as a video) is featured on an American DVD documentary, while "In Pieces" reached number 1 in the ILR airplay chart (an Australian-based provider of network radio programmes) - this track (along with the original bedroom demo version of "She's Got It All") is included on the 2007 Whimsical Records compilation "Elevate - 21 pop and indie gems from the underground". The single has been aired on US, Canadian and German radio as well as UK radio, including Matchbox Radio 24.
Keith's "middle of the road but weird pop songs" were first spotted by ex-Tenpole Tudor member, Richard Coppen. There followed a slot on the Streamline Records (now Matchbox Recordings) compilation CD "Aural Feast", plus numerous London gigs (including venues such as the Bull & Gate, 12 Bar Club, the Spice of Life, Leonards, the Betsey Trotwood and various lounges). Recording sessions with the Sound Joint production company secured slots for two other BLD tracks on separate compilation CDs - these songs (and a third more recent one, "Touch Of Your Kiss") reached the finals of the UK Songwriting Contest in different years. More recently, the changing-time-signature song "Long Distance Friend" features on a Gotham Records promo CD specially recorded for the 2007 FMI festival in Brazil.
Recent reviews of the single have thrown numerous names into the melting pot (such as Ian Dury, Blur, Ray Davies, Babybird, Kevin Coyne, John Shuttleworth, Belle and Sebastian, Paul McCartney, Lightning Seeds) - it's essentially catchy English indie pop in a gentle, quirky, reflective style.
